Mike Albin, Owner (Left)

In 2024, I’m celebrating 19 years of running, a sport that’s taken me around the globe and introduced me to incredible lifelong friends. The idea of owning a run specialty store simmered in the back of my mind, but it wasn’t until 2020, amid remote work, that Dan and I seriously considered it. 18 months later, in June 2021, we opened our doors, embarking on an exhilarating adventure. The support of my amazing staff, each bringing their unique knowledge to serve our customers, is invaluable. Pursuing my dream fills me with joy, and I’m thrilled to share my journey with others. I cherish the early morning hours, dubbed “Albin O’clock” by some, when I lace up for my own training. Running before dawn allows me to reflect and gear up for the day ahead. I often jest with my staff about carrying a notebook because my best ideas strike during these runs, only to slip my mind by the time I reach the store. The camaraderie within this community is both humbling and heartwarming. When customers claim they’re “not runners,” I remind them that pursuing what they love is what truly matters. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or simply embracing movement, you’re living your best life.

Dan Jensen, Owner (Right)

Dan, a Rapid City native, specializes in the rehabilitation and prevention of sports-related injuries. He regularly serves as a physical therapist both in the US & overseas, working with Olympic athletes in various sports, including track & field, basketball, and professional hockey. Notably, Dr. Jensen was selected to be a member of an international sports medicine team by Tim Grover (CEO of Attack Athletics, trainer to Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and other professional athletes) to be the Lead Physical Therapist for hundreds of athletes at the Shanghai Sports Institute.

Outside of work Daniel spends his free time being active weather it be hiking, boating or just exploring the beautiful Black Hills with his wife and 2 daughters.

TJ Boehler, Sales Associate

I am a native of Rapid City. After 12.5 years of living out of state I moved back and have been fortunate enough to be working at Black Hills Running Co. since we opened in June of ’22. Being active has always been a huge part of my life ever since I can remember. I firmly believe that movement benefits all. Whether it’s walking, running, hiking or all in combination, I look forward to helping you find a shoe/apparel that fits you best. See you soon!

Andrew Rexroad,

Marketing & Sales Associate

I’m the Marketing guy at Black Hills Running Co. I fell in love with running later in life, but I have always been a runner through playing sports or staying away from bullies. I grew up a military brat and have lived worldwide. When not at the store, I spend my time with my beautiful wife and two children, exploring, hiking, and creating memories.

Tips from me about running:

  • Slow down and ham it up for the course photographers, you won’t ever regret wasting a couple of seconds for a great photo.
  • Be grateful, and carry that gratitude in your heart when you run, it’ll help when you hit the wall.
  • Run your race, your pace, and don’t let the outside world pressure you to do anything but that.

Trail running beats road running – come at me.

Zach Hentschel, Sales Associate

I started running competitively when I was 7 years old. My first race was a 1-mile cross-country race. Since then, I’ve never stopped running. I’ve done road races, track races, cross country, triathlons, and, my favorite, distance relays. Both of my parents are runners, so it’s always been a large part of my life. I love to push myself to see how fast and far I can go while enjoying every view. Currently, I compete in cross country and track for the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
I’m from Brandon South Dakota and I love the community and support in my hometown. When I started college, I fell in love with the Black Hills and the Mickelson Trail is now my favorite running location. When I joined Black Hills Running Company, I was thrilled to find the spirit of the Black Hills echoed in the running community here.

Kyleigh Devine, Sales Associate

I’ve been running ever since I was 4 when I started playing soccer! I ran cross country in 5th grade, then started track in 6th grade. I ran the 100, 200, and 4×1, and the medley! I grew up in Rapid City, South Dakota and love how beautiful the Black Hills is. I love working at Running Co because the environment is warm and welcoming. I have learned so much about running and shoes since working at Running Co.

FROM: Columbia SC
I moved to SD in 2020 for work. Currently, I work full-time at Ellsworth AFB, helping our Airmen optimize their performance, readiness, and resiliency.
I never ran growing up unless it was around the bases after hitting a dinger. However, now I do seem to receive some enjoyment from it and have been consistently inconsistent for the past few years ever since meeting Mike and the BHRC Crew.
I’ve run two half marathons in the past two years and will continue to do one per year for the time being, and no more. I lift more than I run, so I enjoy helping train and educate runners on the benefits of different types of training.
I enjoy working for BHRC because of the endless Diet Coke and pastries on Saturday mornings. I also enjoy the environment and learning more about what it truly means to be a runner.
Two Fun Facts:
1. Mustard is my condiment of choice.
2. I was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2015

Errin Short, RD

Growing up I wasn’t much of a runner unless it was through basketball, volleyball or softball. I never ran track or cross country and overall my running experience was pretty limited until meeting Mike. About a year later, I ran Sundance to Spearfish in 2022 as my first marathon. You could call it the “Mike Albin effect”. I grew up in Sturgis and then spent 6 glorious years in Brookings studying to become a dietitian. After college, I moved back to the west side (best side) and have been here ever since. My favorite part about working at Black Hills RunCo is connecting with the running community to help them achieve their fitness goals through running and/or nutrition. I always look forward to Saturday morning runs at the Run Co followed by coffee and conversations.
1. I have two daughters. Olive is a 2 y/o golden retriever and Samantha is a 7 y/o Husky 2. I have my motorcycle license but I’m too scared to drive 3. Mustard is my favorite color but I hate the condiment
